Arrests of Individuals Planning "Terrorist" Operations in Iran

Arrests of Individuals Planning

The Iranian Ministry of Intelligence announced today, Sunday, the arrest of individuals who were preparing to carry out "terrorist" operations during the presidential elections. Majid Mir Ahmadi, the Iranian Deputy Minister of Interior for Security and Police, confirmed the arrest of elements sent to the country before the elections to arrange for terrorist operations.

Ahmadi noted that as part of their plans, there were calls to gather in 1,000 squares in support of one candidate, without the candidate's knowledge, to celebrate a pre-victory, which failed due to lack of public support. He added, "Terrorist movements and groups had planned to create an atmosphere of insecurity in the country during the election period by executing terrorist operations and instilling fear and anxiety among the people to prevent them from participating in the elections."

The Iranian Ministry of Interior also announced a second round of the presidential elections next Friday, as no candidate received 50 percent of the voters' votes.
