Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani issued an official invitation today, Monday, during a phone call to the elected Iranian President Masoud Bezhakian to visit Iraq in order to strengthen relations and discuss several important files.
The media office of the Prime Minister stated in a statement that "Al-Sudani had a phone call with Bezhakian, during which he extended his congratulations on his electoral victory and congratulated the Islamic Republic on successfully holding elections in a short period during a pivotal stage that Iran, both government and people, experienced following the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of the Iranian President and the Foreign Minister along with their companions."
According to the statement, the call included "discussions about bilateral relations and reaffirming the continuation of joint cooperation efforts in various sectors and economic and security files, enhancing the interests of the two neighboring countries and the prosperity of their people," while extending "an official invitation to the Iranian President to visit Iraq to strengthen relations and discuss several important files."
For his part, Bezhakian expressed his gratitude to Al-Sudani, affirming his country's desire to expand cooperation and support mutual understandings in many fields, which enhances stability efforts for both countries and the region.
It was expected that the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi would visit Iraq, but the tragic incident of his death in a helicopter crash prevented the visit from taking place. Raisi previously visited Iraq when he held the position of head of the Iranian judiciary on February 8, 2021, at the invitation of his Iraqi counterpart, Faik Zidan, during which he met with senior Iraqi officials, including the Prime Minister and the President, as well as other officials from various political forces.
