The painting "Rest on the Flight into Egypt" (1512) by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian has been sold for a record amount of $22.2 million. The auction house Christie's announced that the painting was sold for £17.5 million, setting a new record for the prices of the artist's works. The painting depicts the religious story of the Virgin Mary, Joseph, and Jesus fleeing from Bethlehem as described in the Gospel of Matthew. The painting was discovered in 2002 in a plastic bag at a bus station in London, and among its previous owners were French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, the Archduchess of Austria from the Habsburg dynasty, and Queen Maria Theresa of Saxony.
