United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed his concern about the situation in Nicaragua and El Salvador following a visit to Guatemala. Turk noted at a press conference that he is "in constant contact with human rights defenders in Nicaragua and victims of human rights violations." He lamented the lack of what he described as cooperation between President Daniel Ortega's government and his office, which makes it very difficult to monitor the situation in Nicaragua and therefore has to be done remotely. Regarding El Salvador, Turk pointed out that "the only sustainable way to confront violence is through respect for human rights."
