On the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Frontska, stated on Tuesday that the organization is firmly committed to supporting Lebanon in protecting its security and stability at a time when the Middle East faces one of its most critical moments in decades.
The Special Coordinator reminded that the main goal of the UN, which includes 193 member states, according to its charter, is to spare future generations the tragedies of war. She said, "Unfortunately, the risks to the peace and security of Lebanon and the region are increasing, but we must never abandon hopes for peace to achieve a more sustainable future for the people of Lebanon."
Expressing serious concern over the continuing exchange of fire across the blue line, she called for de-escalation and an end to violence in order to restore calm in the region. She stated, "It is more urgent than ever to cease hostilities and fully implement Security Council Resolution 1701."
The Special Coordinator affirmed that the UN, which operates in Lebanon through 26 funds, programs, and agencies, has increased its support for Lebanon over the past few years in response to escalating challenges. This support encompasses all aspects of political work, peacekeeping efforts, development, humanitarian response, and respect for human rights, following a comprehensive approach that focuses on leaving no one behind.
Currently, as the UN coordinates emergency planning and readiness with Lebanon, it is also making concerted efforts in collaboration with international partners to help protect Lebanon from conflict and maintain its security and stability. She clarified that despite joint international efforts, sustainable peace can only be secured from within, stating, "This is the right time to strengthen national unity and collective solidarity to face the difficult times that Lebanon is going through."
She added, "The best way to do this is by strengthening and bolstering state institutions, including by electing a new President of the Republic without further delay." The Special Coordinator also emphasized that the best way to celebrate United Nations Day in such difficult times is by translating the ideals laid out in the charter into actions. In this context, she reiterated the recent call from Secretary-General António Guterres to "take action to build a future worthy of the dreams of the children of the region and our world."
While reaffirming commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty, security, stability, development, and territorial integrity, the Special Coordinator confirmed continued support for Lebanon and its people.
