The World Health Organization has recognized the city of Khobar, located in Eastern Saudi Arabia, as a healthy city after it met 80 global standards. Khobar received this recognition for achieving criteria for healthy cities, which fall under 9 areas focusing on community participation and sector collaboration to address health and development determinants based on improved indicators, as well as dealing with outcomes such as health, education, and the environment.
The Saudi Ministry of Health announced that Khobar has met the World Health Organization's standards for healthy cities. On July 17, 2024, Prince Saud bin Nayef, the Emir of the Eastern Province, received the certificate of recognition from Minister of Health Fahd Al-Jalajel at the Emirate's headquarters. This recognition contributes to Khobar's advancement among the top 100 cities worldwide. Saudi Arabia has the highest number of accredited healthy cities in the region, with 16 healthy cities across different areas of the Kingdom.
