U.S. General Kenneth Ekman, coordinating the withdrawal of American forces from Niger, announced today, Friday, that the military is scheduled to complete the withdrawal of all personnel from Air Base 101 in the capital of Niger on Sunday. He stated, "We will hold a joint ceremony on this occasion, which marks the departure of the last U.S. C-17 aircraft. The government of Niger will take control of the former U.S. areas and facilities," during a video conference from the capital of Niger. The military ruling council in Niger ordered the United States in April to withdraw nearly a thousand troops from the country. Niger had been a key partner alongside Washington in combating rebels in the Sahel region of Africa, which have killed thousands and caused the displacement of millions before the coup that occurred last year.
