Israeli war minister Benny Gantz has announced his resignation from the government after the deadline he set for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make strategic decisions regarding the war in Gaza passed. Gantz stated, "Our participation in the war council was for the common destiny, not a political partnership. Leaving the government is a complex and painful decision. Today we depart from the emergency government with heavy hearts."
In a resignation statement delivered today, Gantz emphasized that "Netanyahu is obstructing important strategic decisions for political considerations," affirming that "we are withdrawing from this government because Netanyahu prevents us from advancing towards achieving true victory." The former minister in the war cabinet also mentioned his support for the deal proposed by Biden, urging the Prime Minister to have the courage to see it through, and addressed the families of the captives: "We have failed the test and have not been able to bring back their sons; we must do everything possible for the proposed deal to recover the kidnapped."
Gantz stated that the war in Gaza will be long and will continue, adding, "I call on Defense Minister Gallant to have courage and do what is right." He urged Netanyahu to move towards holding elections as soon as possible and to establish a national inquiry committee, asserting that we need elections to bring about a truly nationalist Zionist unity government. He called on party leaders to stand with him to conduct elections for the formation of a national Zionist unity government.
