How to Alleviate the Severity of Sunburn

During the summer, the chances of experiencing sunburn increase due to the constant rise in temperatures, which may expose the skin to many diseases that can worsen if neglected. Here are some self-care tips to alleviate sunburn.

It is advisable to quickly take an over-the-counter pain reliever as soon as possible after prolonged sun exposure or apply a soothing gel that can be applied to the skin. In addition to the importance of cooling the skin by placing a clean towel soaked with cold water on the affected area, it is preferable for the individual to take a cool bath until the skin calms down completely. Also, drinking a larger amount of water throughout the day helps prevent dehydration.

In case of blisters appearing, there is no need for concern, as healthy skin helps heal the area. If the blisters burst, the individual should carefully cut the dead skin using a clean small pair of scissors and then gently wash the affected area with mild soap and water. After that, apply an antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover it with a non-stick bandage.

The peeling skin should be handled with care; within a few days, the affected area may start to peel, which is the body's way of shedding the upper layer of damaged skin. During the peeling process, doctors recommend continuing to use moisturizer.
