The caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with the Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamiyeh this Wednesday morning at the Grand Serail, with the attendance of the head of the Council for Development and Reconstruction, Nabil al-Jisr. After the meeting, Hamiyeh stated: "We discussed the old new project, which is the Beirut-Bekaa road and the Dhahr al-Baydar tunnel. This is a vital and essential project. Despite the ministerial decisions that have been made and the laws issued by the Parliament, no scientific study or feasibility study has been conducted to allow the state to determine the cost of this project due to its vital and strategic extension to the Lebanese seaports, given Lebanon’s position on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, reaching out to the Arab world. We agreed with Prime Minister Mikati to discuss the matter in a Cabinet session this afternoon due to its importance on all levels." He added: "As for the roads and international highways, there is the Chekka highway and some portions of the southern road, and the Dhahr al-Baydar issue will be a priority for the Ministry of Public Works regarding maintenance, despite the limited budgets, but the priority is the safety of citizens' lives."
