Kuwait's Highest Court Upholds 10-Year Sentence for Royal Family Member

Three sources reported that the Kuwaiti Court of Cassation upheld on Thursday a ruling sentencing Sheikh Sabah Jaber Al-Mubarak, a member of the ruling family, along with his partner and two expatriates, to 10 years in prison, and a lawyer to seven years, on charges related to money laundering in the case known as the "Malaysian Fund" case. Sheikh Sabah Jaber Al-Mubarak is the son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah. The five defendants were also ordered to repay one billion dollars and fined a total of 183 million dinars jointly. Malaysian and American investigators estimate that around 4.5 billion dollars was misappropriated from the fund since its establishment in 2009, and pointed to the involvement of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, employees at Goldman Sachs, and senior officials in other countries.
