In the European Parliament elections, Sánchez's Socialist Workers' Party fell to second place (20 seats) behind the center-right People's Party (22 seats), while Díaz's party won only three seats.
Spain was one of the European countries that recognized the Palestinian state last May, a move that angered Israel, which accused it of siding with Hamas, leading to a diplomatic crisis between the two countries.
