UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini issued a strong condemnation on Sunday following the Israeli attack on Saturday against a school run by the agency, which was housing nearly 2,000 displaced persons in central Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 Palestinians and injuring dozens more. Lazzarini highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the repeated attacks on UNRWA facilities during the nine-month conflict, where over half of UNRWA's facilities have been bombed, leading to the deaths of 520 individuals and injuries to approximately 1,600 others, most of whom are women and children seeking safety. In response to claims by the Israeli army that UN facilities are being used by armed Palestinian groups, Lazzarini emphasized the need for independent investigations to ascertain the facts and hold accountable those responsible for attacks on United Nations buildings or their misuse. He added, "These are allegations I take very seriously." Lazzarini urged for a ceasefire to alleviate suffering and protect civilians in Gaza and Israel, stressing the humanitarian toll of the protracted conflict, and called for immediate action to end hostilities and ensure the release of all hostages. He stated, "The longer this war goes on, the deeper the rift gets, and the more people suffer. Enough is enough."
