Manchester United has agreed on the deal for Dan Ashworth to become the new sporting director, according to the British news agency. Ashworth has been on leave since early this year, by decision of Newcastle's management, amid interest from INEOS, which manages the football operations for Manchester United after its founder, Jim Ratcliffe, acquired a minority stake in the club. Ashworth will start his duties at Old Trafford immediately after the completion of the deal. Some reports had indicated that Newcastle was seeking £20 million for Ashworth's release, a sum Ratcliffe described in February as "somewhat ridiculous," but a compromise has been reached for now. Ashworth is the latest administrative addition to Manchester United after the arrival of Omar Berrada from City as CEO, and Jason Wilcox coming from Southampton to serve as the academy director. Ashworth first gained prominence through his work at West Bromwich, before becoming the technical director of the English Football Association in 2012, moving to Brighton before working with Newcastle since 2022.
