A local official in the Amhara region of northwestern Ethiopia was killed after being shot by extremists. The Amhara Media Corporation reported that the attackers are members of the "Fano" militia, the second-largest group among approximately 80 ethnic and linguistic identities in Ethiopia, who took up arms in April 2023 against the federal government and regional authorities. It added, "Our brave and hardworking brother Ahmed Ali... was martyred at the age of 39 by bullets from extremists opposed to peace and unity." His killing comes a month after the lifting of the state of emergency imposed last August in an attempt to eliminate the Fano uprising in Amhara. Ethiopia is experiencing numerous local conflicts that intertwine political and social demands, along with many violations against civilians.
