Dentist Vikas Bringa provided clarification about the various warning signs of oral cancer that people should pay attention to. Bringa stated, "Oral cancer rates are rising, and the survival rate is low because it is discovered very late." He urged people to become more aware of the main symptoms of the disease. He explained that the four signs everyone needs to know include:
- A sore that does not heal
- Numbness or tingling in the lips, chin, or tongue
- White or red patches inside the mouth
- Loose teeth without a clear reason
Regarding the risk of developing oral cancer, Dr. Neil Sikka, a dentist at Bupa Dental Care, pointed out several key factors that patients should be aware of. He explained, "In general, alcohol and tobacco use are among the greatest risks leading to oral cancer. There is also evidence suggesting that a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can be a precursor to oral cancer. Another factor attributed to poor oral health is that broken or rough teeth can cause sores in the mouth, which may become cancerous if they do not heal."
He continued, "Moreover, excessive sun exposure can increase the risk of oral cancer, so patients should remain vigilant during the summer." Dr. Sikka mentioned that dentists look for potential signs during exams, and oral cancer screening is part of the routine check-up. He explained that dentists examine the patient's head, neck, inside the mouth, cheeks, lips, tongue (including underneath), back of the throat, gums, and teeth.
He added, "In some cases, you may also receive X-rays, which will give your dentist a clear view of potential changes in the structures." In addition to regular check-ups with the dentist, Dr. Sikka noted that there are some examinations that can be done at home.
