The United States Assumes the Presidency of the UN Security Council for August

Starting tomorrow, Tuesday, the United States will take over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of August, succeeding the United Kingdom.

The permanent representative of the United States to the United Nations, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, is scheduled to hold a press conference tomorrow evening to inform accredited media about the Council's work plan, following the Council's approval of the agenda in a morning session that same day.

The Council consists of 15 member states, each with one vote, including five permanent members that have veto power: Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Additionally, there are ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly: the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Mozambique, Malta, Japan, Ecuador, Gabon, Brazil, Ghana, and Albania.

The Security Council is one of the six main organs of the United Nations, which also includes the Secretariat, the General Assembly, the International Court of Justice, the Trusteeship Council, and the Economic and Social Council.
