NATO Commits to Ukraine and Sends a Message to China

NATO members are preparing to support Ukraine "in its irreversible path" towards full integration into the alliance and will urge China to stop its support for Russia's war efforts against Kyiv. A draft joint statement anticipated for the NATO summit in Washington notes that China has become one of Russia's key supporters in its war against Ukraine and still poses a challenge to Europe.

According to the draft, member states of the alliance are committed to providing Ukraine with at least 40 billion euros in funding over the next year, as well as establishing mechanisms to organize the provision of military equipment and training for its forces. The draft also states that allies will pledge to support Ukraine on its path towards full integration into the European Union and NATO.

The alliance will invite Ukraine to join once all members agree and all conditions are met. The draft also addresses the importance of the Indo-Pacific region to NATO, as developments there directly affect security in Europe and the member states. The alliance has expressed its welcome for enhanced cooperation with partners in the Asia-Pacific region to support Ukraine.

The draft points out that the alliance is concerned about developments in China's space capabilities and activities, adding that it will urge Beijing to engage in strategic discussions to mitigate risks. Furthermore, it mentioned that members are prepared to maintain communication with Moscow in an effort to reduce risks and escalation. NATO countries have been meeting since Tuesday and will continue until Thursday in Washington to commemorate the 75th anniversary of its founding.
