The Israeli police announced on Wednesday the filing of charges against a former Israeli army soldier accused of sympathizing with ISIS and receiving training to fight with the group abroad.
The police identified the suspect as Khamis Sawad, an Arab-Israeli citizen from the village of Al-Husayniyya in Galilee, who served in the Israeli army from 2017 to 2019.
According to the indictment, Sawad showed increasing interest in ISIS since 2023 and had watched training videos on combat strategies, weapon usage, and the manufacturing of rockets and drones.
The police's central unit in the Galilee, in collaboration with the Shin Bet (Israel's internal security agency), arrested the suspect during a joint operation before subjecting him to interrogation.
The prosecution submitted the indictment to the Haifa Magistrate's Court, along with a request to keep the suspect in custody until the completion of judicial proceedings.
