Kataeb: A Firm Political Decision Needed to Control Palestinian Camps

The Kataeb political bureau stated that "the presidential elections in Lebanon, in their democratic context, have collapsed, especially after the session on June 14, which entrenched the equation of either electing a president loyal to Hezbollah and its allies or having no president at all, while either submitting to their will or facing a vacuum under threats and accusations." In a statement following a meeting chaired by party leader MP Sami Gemayel, the bureau emphasized “the party leader’s approach to the coup-like reality Lebanon has been experiencing since 2005, characterized by assassination, armed intimidation, destruction of institutions, and state seizure, led by a group that takes orders from Iran to implement its interests. This reality must be confronted by all non-traditional peaceful means.”

The political bureau reiterated its demand for "a fundamental resolution to the issue of Palestinian camps, and a clear and final political decision from the Lebanese state to put an end to the lawlessness of factions and party interference, granting the Lebanese Army the necessary powers to control the situation, collect weapons, and implement the Palestinian Authority's demands to ensure the Lebanese state exerts its sovereignty over Palestinian camps to secure safety and peace."

It considered that "the new wave of illegal infiltration from Syrians into Lebanese territory is purely economically motivated and requires unprecedented general mobilization from all concerned military and political apparatuses to firmly stop it, to put an end to the inflow of huge numbers that pose a clear threat to Lebanon and the Lebanese people and endanger their existence."

The bureau called on "the international community to assume its responsibilities in this regard, realizing that what is happening is akin to the slaughter of the country, and that it is the duty of world nations to immediately act to lift the injustice from Lebanon and work to assist Syrians in returning to their country or redistributing them to capable countries that can provide them with shelter."

The political bureau expressed sorrow over "Lebanon missing one of the largest economic opportunities for development and global opening, as the world witnesses the launch of the largest economic corridor connecting India and Europe via the Middle East, while Lebanon remains mired in its isolation and mire, missing rarely repeated opportunities for prosperity that are only seized by countries that have distanced themselves from the logic of cross-border conflicts and endless senseless wars."
