NATO appointed Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the new Secretary General of the alliance on Wednesday. Last Thursday, the outgoing Dutch Prime Minister secured the upcoming position to lead NATO, which comes at a critical time for the alliance after the withdrawal of his only competitor, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. The 32 NATO member countries officially endorsed the nomination of the 57-year-old seasoned politician. He is expected to assume the role at the end of the current Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's term on October 1. Jens Stoltenberg expressed his warm welcome for Rutte's appointment, describing him as a true transatlanticist and a strong leader. He wished Rutte success in continuing to strengthen NATO.
