In a strange incident, an official in an extremist religious movement that caused upheaval in Dhi Qar province, southern Iraq, killed two individuals and presented them as a "sacrifice." The intelligence directorate in Al-Diwaniyah province announced on Sunday that the suspect was arrested in the Al-Hamzah Al-Sharqi district while heading to Karbala province. They clarified that the detained individual is a leader in the "Al-Alaheya" movement in Dhi Qar, and he openly admitted during interrogation to killing two people who belonged to the same movement, claiming it was to offer them as a "sacrifice to God."
A local source in Dhi Qar revealed on May 15, 2023, that a group calling itself "the sacrifice" or "Al-Alaheya," in the Suq al-Shuyukh district in southern Dhi Qar, had instilled fear in the local community after one of its members committed suicide by hanging recently inside a Hussainiya (a place of mourning) in the mentioned district, as reported by the Shafaq News Agency at the time. The source also indicated that three members of this movement had committed suicide. This group is considered illegal under Iraqi laws as its ideology is based on self-sacrifice.
