Iraq Executes 10 People by Hanging for Terrorism Charges

Media reported that "Iraq carried out the death penalty by hanging today, Monday, against ten individuals convicted of terrorism-related charges." The executions were conducted in a prison in the city of Nasiriyah in southern Iraq, and all the convicted individuals are Iraqis. It was clarified that the ten men were found guilty of belonging to the Islamic State organization and committing "serious terrorist crimes." In April, Iraq executed 11 people on terrorism charges, which drew criticism from Amnesty International, highlighting concerns over the possibility of more executions occurring without announcement due to a "disturbing lack of transparency" regarding execution processes in Iraq in recent months. Iraq has referred hundreds suspected of being jihadists to trial and has carried out several mass executions since the defeat of Islamic State militants in a U.S.-backed military operation from 2014 to 2017.
