Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed today, Tuesday, that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is committed to establishing a just and equitable global system with a central role for the United Nations, and to working towards forming a multipolar global framework based on cooperation. Speaking at the Shanghai summit via video link in New Delhi, Putin stated, "Our organization is firmly committed to building a fair and multipolar global order, based on international law and universally recognized principles of mutual respect and cooperation among sovereign states, while maintaining the central coordinating role of the United Nations."
He added that the Shanghai Organization will enhance cooperation in the security field and thanked the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization for their support in defending the constitutional order in Russia during the armed mutiny by the Wagner Group. Putin also indicated that Russia supports the draft joint statement of the organization, which reflects a unified approach to international issues.
He emphasized that geopolitical contradictions are becoming sharper in the world and that security is deteriorating, clarifying that a hybrid war is ongoing against Russia. In another context, Putin claimed that for a long time near the Russian borders, Ukraine was created as an anti-Russian entity to curb Russia's development and has immersed itself in the ideology of neo-Nazism, adding that "for eight years, weapons have been pumped into it, while ignoring the aggression committed against civilians in Donbas, all in order to jeopardize Russia's security and hinder its development."
Putin asserted that his country confidently faces and will confront external pressures, sanctions, and provocations, noting that Russia is facing sanctions and restrictions with confidence. He pointed out that over 80 percent of trade between Russia and China is conducted in rubles and yuan, indicating methods to counter sanctions. He highlighted that the Russian people are now more united than ever, and that society as a whole and diplomatic circles have clearly demonstrated resilience and high responsibility towards the fate of the homeland by standing united against the attempt of armed rebellion.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization held a virtual summit today, Tuesday, chaired by India. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, it was announced days ago that Iran's full membership in the organization will be formalized during the meeting.
