The intensity of wildfires throughout Greece has diminished today, Wednesday, after the fires resulted in the deaths of three people and the evacuation of thousands of tourists from the country. The Greek government has been working to contain the damage to the island's reputation, which is one of the country’s main sources of income, heavily relying on tourism, especially in Rhodes, which attracts around 1.5 million foreign tourists during the summer months. About three thousand tourists have left Rhodes for their home countries on flights as of yesterday, Tuesday, while travel companies have canceled future trips. Additionally, a local governor indicated that a fire reported last night on the island of Corfu, although not threatening homes, may have been set intentionally. Temperatures in Greece are expected to rise today, Wednesday, exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in some areas. The Greek government announced that the Acropolis in Athens will be closed at 11 AM (08:00 GMT).
