Yemeni diver Yasser Al-Sururi considers surprise elements to be one of the things that makes diving a very enjoyable sport for him. In 2023, Al-Sururi managed to give a new lease on life to a small shark in the waters of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after it got stuck in a fish trap. Al-Sururi's colleague encountered the cage underwater on a day in July and informed him about it. They both quickly dove down to change the shark's fate, bringing the necessary tools to open the cage, which was made of metal rods.
Al-Sururi said in an interview with CNN Arabic: "When we reached the cage, the shark was frightened by our presence next to it, as this type of shark is shy around people."
Sharks are among the most endangered marine creatures due to overfishing, habitat loss, and the climate crisis, according to the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Yemeni diver emphasized: "Sharks are a crucial element in maintaining the ecological balance underwater and help limit the reproduction of harmful fish that affect coral reefs."
