Petition by Hundreds of Thousands of Germans Calls for Rematch with Spain

Around 300,000 German fans have signed an electronic petition asking UEFA to replay the match between Spain in the quarter-finals of "Euro 2024" due to allegations of refereeing errors. Eric V, the founder of the petition on the Change.org website, explained that this step comes in light of several incorrect decisions made by English referee Anthony Taylor during the match that ended with Spain winning 2-1 after extra time last Friday.

The main incident that sparked this controversy was a shot by Jamal Musiala that hit the hand of Marc Cucurella during extra time while the score was tied at one goal each, but referee Taylor did not award a penalty to Germany, nor did the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervene. This incident caused a debate; however, UEFA had confirmed before the tournament that such incidents—when the arm is not in an unnatural position—would not result in a penalty.

By the morning of Sunday, July 7, 315,000 people had signed the petition, but it remains a gesture of symbolic significance at best, as the Spanish team prepares to face France in the semi-finals next Tuesday.
