Hundreds of families of Israeli soldiers have threatened to withdraw their sons from the war in Gaza after the Knesset approved by majority a law extending the exemption of a wide sector of Haredim from military service. In a letter addressed to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant and Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, the families expressed that in light of the discussion regarding the exemption of religious school students from military service, they would ask their children to stop participating in the war.
The letter stated: "We will ask our sons and soldiers to cease their participation in the war, to put their weapons aside, and to return home permanently. A law like this cannot be passed while soldiers give their lives. The government betrays its citizens and sacrifices our children's lives for its political survival. We will not place our children on the altar of public corruption."
Yesterday, Monday, the Israeli Knesset approved a controversial bill that extends the exemption of a wide sector of Haredim from military service by a majority. The request of the government to apply the continuity law to the recruitment law was approved with 63 votes in favor and 57 against the law.
