Benefits and Harms of Lavender

Biologist Roman Oparen, associate professor in the Department of General Biology and Biovariability at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Russian University of Education, revealed the benefits and harms of the lavender plant or "lavandula". The scientist notes that "lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a plant with soothing properties. It is widely used in the field of aromatherapy and cosmetics to improve skin and hair condition, as well as for relaxation and stress relief. It also has disinfectant and anti-inflammatory properties and helps improve sleep."

He states, "Lavender can be used in food as a spice, where it is added to certain beverages to give them a special flavor, as well as to some types of sweets for a distinctive taste, and to cleaning products to impart a pleasant scent. Dried lavender can also be added to tea for a soothing drink with a refreshing flavor." According to him, "it should not be overused, as an excessive amount gives the dish or drink a bitter taste."

He adds, "It should be considered that consuming lavender in large quantities or in very concentrated forms may cause negative effects, including allergies, headaches, and nausea. Therefore, moderation is advised, and it's recommended to consult a doctor before using it as a food plant or medicinal product."
