Bou Saab Carries a Message to Blaschart to Find a Solution for the Syrian Displacement Issue

Today, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Elias Bou Saab received the United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Ms. Jane Hennis-Plasschaert, in her first visit after assuming her duties in Lebanon. The discussion addressed the issue of Syrian displaced persons, with Bou Saab conveying a message to the United Nations to find a quick and serious solution regarding the displaced, stating that they should no longer be referred to as displaced but rather as illegal immigrants.

The situation in southern Lebanon was also discussed, with Ms. Hennis-Plasschaert mentioning her recent visit there and an upcoming trip to Israel to gain insights from the other side. Bou Saab explained to the special coordinator that "war would not benefit any party, knowing that it would be a painful conflict and a significant loss for Lebanon, which wishes for this war to end." He emphasized that "the Israelis should also realize that this war will not be a walk in the park and will not yield any positive results for them, nor will it return the displaced to their homes in the north. Instead, it will lead to an increase in migration across all Israeli territories, in addition to the substantial economic cost, as this war will not be short-lived and is unlikely to achieve any success on their part."

He noted that ultimately, the solution would come through indirect diplomatic negotiations after a painful, bloody war, suggesting it is better to avoid the conflict and move directly toward a diplomatic solution. He highlighted that what is proposed by the American mediator Amos Hochstein could be the key to this solution when the Israelis decide to end the bloody war they are waging on Gaza.
