Hunter Biden's Attorney: The Appointment of a Special Counsel Will Change Nothing in the Case

Hunter Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, stated that the special counsel appointed by the attorney general to investigate allegations against President Joe Biden's son "does not have any new evidence." Lowell pointed out that "after five years, the U.S. attorney prosecuting Hunter Biden has only managed to present tax charges and unlawful possession of firearms, and this should not change simply because the attorney general appointed a special counsel in the case." He raised the question, "If anything changes from his conclusion, what affected the process that wasn't the facts and the law?"

Lowell emphasized that "there is no new evidence to be found," and noted that "the only thing that will change is a review of some charges." He explained that he and the prosecutors are still at a "standstill" regarding negotiations to revive a plea agreement, meaning that Hunter Biden could face trial. However, he mentioned that a trial "is not inevitable," clarifying, "We have been trying to avoid trial all along, as have the prosecutors."

These remarks came after Delaware attorney David Weiss, who was investigating Hunter Biden's business dealings, received an appointment on Thursday to become a special counsel in the case. U.S. Attorney Merrick Garland stated that Weiss had informed him days earlier that he had "reached a stage in his investigation where he should continue his work as a special counsel and requested his appointment," adding that he accepted Weiss's request, who was appointed to his position by former President Donald Trump, after determining that it was "in the public interest" to do so.

Hunter Biden has been charged with two misdemeanors for failing to pay taxes on income exceeding $1.5 million in 2017 and 2018. He is also accused of unlawfully possessing a firearm while being an addict and using a controlled substance during his struggle with drug addiction.
