Doctors in India have begun a 24-hour strike in non-emergency services nationwide today, Saturday, in protest against the rape and murder of a female physician in Kolkata, eastern India. More than one million doctors are expected to participate in the strike. The Indian Medical Association stated, "The strike, which began at 6 AM, means that elective medical procedures and outpatient consultations will not be available during the strike in the most populous country in the world. Emergency departments in hospitals will remain operational, handling emergency cases."
