Pakistan announced today, Friday, the arrest of "one of the close associates" of former al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, who was killed in the same country in 2011. Anti-terrorism officials apprehended Ameen al-Haq in the city of Gujrat in Punjab province, eastern Pakistan, on charges of planning "subversive activities" and seeking to "target important facilities" in the country. The Punjab Counter Terrorism Department stated in a press release: "The arrest of Ameen al-Haq is a major victory for anti-terrorism efforts being made in Pakistan and around the world." Ameen al-Haq was classified in the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations as a partner of Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, according to the Director of the Punjab Counter Terrorism Department, Usman Akram Gondal, during a press conference. He explained: "He resurfaced after the withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan. He went to Afghanistan in August and began efforts to reorganize al-Qaeda."
