A foreign tourist was injured today, Tuesday, after being attacked by a bear in Northern Italy, according to the authorities in the Trentino region. The region stated in a brief announcement, "A foreign tourist was attacked by a bear this Tuesday morning in the Narnoncolo area," near the regional capital Trento. They noted that "the man was rescued by medical personnel and airlifted to Santa Chiara Hospital in Trento with injuries." Local media reported that the injured man is a 43-year-old French national who was hiking in the woods when he was attacked by the bear. Reports indicate that the injuries do not pose a threat to the tourist's life. For its part, the region clarified that forest rangers also intervened at the scene to attempt to identify the bear involved in the attack. In April 2023, an Italian runner was killed in a bear attack in Trentino, marking a first of its kind in Italy. Animal welfare activists say that the bear accused of killing the runner was separated from her cubs after the incident and transferred to a pen. Following several calls from animal rights activists, regional authorities announced in May that the female bear, known as JJ4, would be relocated to Germany later this year to a sanctuary near the Black Forest.
