Professor Stanislav Ionov from the Department of Therapy at the Russian Education University announced that people who sleep under air conditioning are more susceptible to illnesses. He says, "Those who sleep under air conditioning put their health at risk as they are more likely to get sick because the human body's temperature regulation throughout the day operates through biological rhythms during the night and day. These rhythms are stronger during the day due to physical and mental stress. Meanwhile, during sleep, the body's temperature decreases by about one degree. If the air conditioning temperature is set to +15, +17, or even +19 degrees, the heat transfer process increases, leading to a further decrease in body temperature. This drop has disturbing consequences, as a person may wake up in the morning suffering from a cough and a runny nose."
He adds, "The ideal room temperature is 20-22 degrees, and it is necessary to set air conditioners to this range. By the way, a fan is considered safer in this regard as it does not lower the air temperature but cools the body by generating airflow."
The professor points out that another common mistake causing cold-related illnesses is placing the air conditioning unit above or in front of the bed. He advises against making such a mistake because even a slight direct airflow increases heat transfer and can lead to a drop in body temperature, consequently resulting in colds. It is better to install the air conditioning unit in the bedroom away from the bed, so the person is not in a direct airflow zone.
