A team of archaeologists in Spain has discovered ancient Roman settlements that could be the site of a "hidden empire." When they began the project in 2023, the scientists hoped to find at least one settlement in the Sierra de Cádiz area but were shocked to uncover 57 sites of "unprecedented nature" from the Roman Empire era. The team believes that the newly discovered settlements are connected by trade routes and communications in the region. The researchers from the University of Cádiz focused on the settlements in the areas surrounding "Arcos de la Frontera," "Borno," "Villamartín," and "Puerto Serrano," which are linked by the Guadalete River, leading the team to believe they were part of a hidden empire. During the search, the scientists used ground-penetrating radar, a tool that sends radar pulses underground to reveal any hidden objects.
