The Israeli website "Walla" reported that gangs in Sinai, along the Egyptian border, have recently started smuggling various types of drugs into Israel using drones. The news site cited an Israeli security source saying, "It's like emptying the sea with a spoon in an area whose borders exceed 200 kilometers; if there is no Egyptian cooperation, it will start with drugs and move on to terrorist operations."
The Israeli site explained that according to sources in the "Ozbat Adom" unit, responsible for the Israeli-Egyptian border up to Eilat, individual cases of drug smuggling via drones started happening, initially crossing from one side to the other, "but now individual cases have become a much wider phenomenon." The sources also noted that most reports from soldiers indicate that these drones have been spotted in the Galots area, Mount Harif, Kadesh Barnea, and Bir Milka.
An informed source said, "There are numerous reports from citizens to the army indicating they see very large drones passing from one side to the other, which can carry weights of up to dozens of kilograms, similar to those used by farmers for spraying, but they are actually transporting various types of drugs." The source confirmed that the unit has begun using different means in the airspace, as well as anti-drone weapons.
