The Swiss national team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the UEFA European Championship after defeating the reigning champion Italy 2-0 on Saturday in the first match of the Round of 16, currently being held in Germany. The Swiss team succeeded in repeating its impressive performance in the European Championship, having previously eliminated France in the last edition in 2021 with a penalty shootout score of 5-4 after drawing 3-3.
In addition to advancing to the quarterfinals, the Swiss team avenged its earlier loss to Italy, which had won 3-0 in the group stage of the last tournament. The Italian team, which was the defending champion, was eliminated from the competition after a challenging path to the Round of 16, having drawn with Croatia in the final moments of the last group stage match.
Remo Freuler scored the first goal for Switzerland in the 39th minute, followed by his teammate Ruben Vargas adding the second goal in the 46th minute. Switzerland will face the winner of the match between England and Slovakia in the Round of 16, which will take place on Sunday.
