The Indian Ministry of Health announced today, Thursday, that over 100 people have died due to the ongoing heatwave in the country, with more than 40,000 cases of heat stroke reported over the past three and a half months. According to the Health Ministry's data, 100 individuals in India lost their lives from heat stroke between March 1 and June 18. The highest number of deaths – 36 cases – was reported in Uttar Pradesh, followed by other northern states including Rajasthan, Bihar, and Odisha.
The data also indicated that out of 40,272 suspected heat stroke cases during this period, 457 cases were reported on Tuesday alone. The capital city, New Delhi, experienced a severe rise in temperatures, despite brief rainfall and winds this morning. The country's meteorological department anticipates a decrease in temperatures in the coming days but simultaneously warns that harsh weather conditions may resume afterward.
In recent weeks, some areas of the Indian capital recorded temperatures as high as 51 degrees Celsius, leading to a record demand for electricity and frequent outages in the city, which is also facing a severe water crisis. Several regions in northern India were forced to close schools due to the heat.
