Minister of Defense at the Border

National Defense Minister Maurice Sleem inspected the Second Land Border Regiment in Ras Baalbek and was informed about the monitoring and surveillance procedures in the eastern border areas. The visit began at the Hosh Sayid Ali crossing near the Qasr area, where he was welcomed by the commander of the regiment, Colonel Mohamad Dahbol, and officers. There was an explanation of the regiment's mission in monitoring and surveilling illegal movements and detecting infiltrations by terrorist groups, as well as countering them. It was notable on the ground how intertwined Lebanese and Syrian territories are due to the nature of the borders.

Minister Sleem then proceeded to the regiment's headquarters in Ras Baalbek, where military reception and honors were held. He addressed the gathered officers and units, stating: "Your presence is very important in this area, and your sacrifices are greatly appreciated despite the difficult circumstances our country is going through. I see in your faces all the determination and will to protect the borders of the homeland from dangers that may infiltrate across the borders or face you within your area of responsibility."

He added, "The most glorious and beautiful foreheads are yours, without a doubt. I am a son of this institution in which I served for forty years of actual service. Coincidentally, today, on November 12, 1972, I joined the military academy and retired in 2012. Therefore, from my position as Minister of Defense, I know the details of your daily lives—officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers. I understand what it means for you to undertake these defensive and security duties in this cherished part of our country. Your sacrifices are valued at all levels, first at the popular level—citizens look up to you with all hope, expectation, faith, and trust. You are the men of the army; you are the homeland. Your leadership gives full attention to your conditions and makes every effort to enhance your capabilities. The political authority in both its legislative and executive branches supports you to the fullest extent. I have sensed ongoing responsiveness whenever any demand concerning you and the army in general is raised."

Minister Sleem concluded: "Hold on to the motto of honor, sacrifice, and loyalty, as you are the hope of the people, and with your sacrifices and efforts, there is no fear for the homeland."

He then met with the commander of the regiment and its officers and soldiers to learn about the measures taken and the technical means used to curb smuggling operations and the challenges faced by the regiment while carrying out its duties.

Minister Sleem inspected a border center belonging to the Second Land Border Regiment, where surveillance towers are spread across the sector. He then visited the command of the Ninth Infantry Brigade, where he was received by Brigade Commander Brigadier General Kamal Nahra and several officers and soldiers. Honors were held, and he expressed his appreciation for their efforts and sacrifices in facing terrorists and lawbreakers. He assured them of their leadership's and the political authority's concern for everything that matters to the military institution and the rights of soldiers on all levels.

Minister Sleem met with the brigade commander and officers, listened to their circumstances, answered their questions, and reassured them that he is closely monitoring all matters concerning the military institution and that things will always be moving towards the better.
