The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abu Gheit, strongly condemned the decisions made by the Israeli Cabinet regarding the withdrawal of the Palestinian Authority's powers in "Area B," punishing some officials by restricting their movements, and "launching Israeli settlement construction in various areas of the West Bank." He stated that "all these decisions represent a complete and final coup against the Oslo agreements, reverting the situation back to pre-zero point and entrenching the logic of blatant occupation."
Abu Gheit remarked that the Israeli government's decisions in the West Bank constitute a "complete coup against Oslo."
Details from the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Jamal Rushdi, highlighted that Abu Gheit urged the international community to see the Israeli government for what it truly is: a right-wing racist government unconcerned with peace, aiming to dismantle any semblance of Palestinian authority and entrenching the reality of occupation across the West Bank, stripping Palestinians of any control over their lives, including in areas (B) which, according to the Oslo agreements, are under Palestinian civil control.
The spokesperson added that "the recent decisions reflect the Israeli government's complete submission to the extreme right represented by the Minister of Finance, and they aim to embarrass – and even insult – the international community, which has shown a contrary inclination toward expanding recognition of the Palestinian state, by undermining all the components of the two-state solution."
He emphasized that "such decisions and actions exacerbate tensions in the West Bank, rolling back the clock to before the Oslo agreements, and seek to subject Palestinians to a regime of direct occupation that can only be described as apartheid."
