Local police stated on Wednesday that one person has died and eight others are trapped, some with serious injuries, after a portion of a hotel collapsed overnight near the Moselle River in Germany. The German police reported in a statement that they have located the body but have not yet retrieved it, adding that they have managed to contact some of the people still trapped. The statement said, "Given the nature of the damage, this is a very difficult operation," noting that the building located in the town of Kröv, along the banks of the Moselle River, can only be accessed by emergency responders with the utmost caution. Investigators believe that 14 people were inside the building when the upper floor collapsed around 11 PM on Tuesday night, and five of them managed to escape unharmed. Police said that 31 neighbors were evacuated from their homes for their safety. The Moselle region attracts tourists due to its picturesque towns and steep vineyards along the riverbanks.
