The restaurant "Disfrutar" in Barcelona was awarded the title of "Best Restaurant in the World" on Thursday as part of the prestigious "Fifty Best" list, which was dominated this year by restaurants from Spain and Latin America. "Disfrutar" (meaning "enjoy" in Spanish) opened in 2014 near the Ninot Market in the city located in the Catalonia region. The "Fifty Best" list, managed by the British magazine "Restaurant," described it as a restaurant with "far-reaching technique, original thinking, and groundbreaking flavors."
"Disfrutar" is run by three chefs who trained at the famous restaurant "El Bulli" in Roses, Spain, which topped the "Fifty Best" list five times, starting with the inaugural list in 2002. A Spanish restaurant secured second place, "Asador Etxebarri" in the town of Atxondo in the Basque Country. The third place went to "Table de Bruno Verjus" in Paris, which is one of the most expensive restaurants in the French capital.
The "Fifty Best" list was launched in 2002 and quickly established itself as an international alternative to the famous Michelin Guide from France. The list relies on over a thousand voters from 27 regions worldwide, consisting of a mix of chefs, food bloggers, and travel-loving gourmets. Spanish and Latin American institutions dominated the top ten of this year's ranking, with "DiverXO" in Madrid taking fourth place, "Maido" in Lima, Peru, fifth, "Quintonil" in Mexico City seventh, and "Don Julio" in Buenos Aires tenth.
