Prominent diplomatic sources revealed that prior communications are taking place ahead of the Baghdad 2 Conference, which will be held in Aqaba, Jordan, at the invitation of King Abdullah II on the 21st and 22nd of this month. French President Emmanuel Macron is set to participate, and there are efforts to include a significant section about Lebanon in the final statement. This section is said to reflect the outcomes of consultations held in Doha between the French president, Qatari officials, and influential countries regarding the Lebanese situation, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and several Lebanese politicians who visited Doha recently.
Despite Lebanon not being invited to participate in the conference for unknown reasons, the sources expect that the final statement will confirm support for solving the political problem, emphasizing adherence to the Taif Agreement and calling for the election of a new president and the formation of a new government that can address the needs and aspirations of the Lebanese people in resolving the pressing crisis. The statement is also anticipated to call for necessary reforms in the state institutions and ministries and a dedicated effort to establish the foundation required for reviving the state. Additionally, the commitment of the international community to assist Lebanon and provide necessary support to revitalize the deteriorating financial and economic situation is expected to be reiterated.
The sources noted that the communications preceding the conference focused on the potential participation of Iran and Saudi Arabia with prominent delegations to allow President Macron to address the Lebanese issue realistically with both nations and agree on how to provide assistance. However, the organizers of the conference were informed that the Iranian Foreign Minister would represent his country, and the Saudi representation might be at the same level, indicating a general consultation and ensuring that the final statement reflects the conference attendees' positions regarding the Lebanese crisis.
