Reports have indicated that a team of doctors removed a massive mass of hair from the abdomen of a 25-year-old woman at a hospital in Manabí, Ecuador. The surgery, performed by a surgical team at Verdi Ceballos Hospital, lasted only 45 minutes.
In a statement published on X, Dr. Pedro Lovato, one of the surgeons who oversaw the operation, revealed that the mass measured 16 inches in length and weighed two pounds (907.18 grams). Lovato noted, "The mass occupied the entire stomach cavity and could be identified by touch from the outside."
The hair mass had developed over the past two years after the woman began eating her hair. She suffered from severe pain and frequent vomiting, facing difficulties in consuming solid and liquid foods. Lovato stated, "The patient suffers from a psychological and emotional disorder, so the final diagnosis was made through video endoscopy conducted by the gastroenterology service."
The massive accumulation of hair reached the first part of the small intestine, known as the duodenum, causing the young woman to lose a lot of weight due to her inability to eat. Lovato explained that "the surgery also prevented other serious injuries to the stomach."
