United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced that global average temperatures have shattered records in recent days, and billions of people are facing a "pandemic" of extreme heat. Guterres stated during a press conference, "It has been a week of unprecedented heat. First, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service announced that Sunday, July 21, was the hottest day ever recorded. Then, on Monday, July 22, temperatures rose even more. Now we have just received data indicating that Tuesday, July 23, was in the same range; in other words, the past Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday were the three hottest days ever." He pointed out that if there is one thing uniting the world, it is that the global population is increasingly exposed to extreme heat. Guterres added that "the Earth is getting hotter and more dangerous for everyone. Billions of people are facing a pandemic of extreme heat." Earlier, the United Nations World Meteorological Organization reported that global temperatures could reach record levels in the next five years.
