On Saturday, the campaign team of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced that it had been hacked, accusing "foreign sources" of leaking internal communications and a file about J.D. Vance, the candidate for vice president. Trump's team suggested that Iran was behind the hacking, while Politico previously reported that it had received emails containing information about the Republican candidate's campaign from an anonymous source.
Trump campaign spokesperson Stephen Cheung stated in a statement: "These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, with the intent to interfere in the 2024 elections and sow chaos in our democratic process." Cheung referred to a report released by Microsoft this week indicating that Iranian hackers "sent a phishing email in June to a senior official in the presidential campaign."
The documents received by Politico included information about J.D. Vance, the candidate for vice president if Trump wins the election in November. In 2016, the Democratic National Committee's private emails were also hacked, revealing internal exchanges related to Hillary Clinton, the candidate chosen by the party at that time to face Trump.
