The Spanish Ministry of the Interior announced that one person was killed and another seriously injured in an attack carried out with a knife at a church in Algeciras on Wednesday. A sacristan was killed and a priest was seriously injured in the knife attack targeting the church in southern Spain, according to a police source speaking to AFP.
The Ministry of the Interior stated in a brief announcement, "Shortly before 8 PM, an individual carried out a knife attack, killing one person and injuring others in the Cádiz province." It added, "The attacker has been arrested and is in the custody of the Spanish National Police." The ministry reported that the victim was killed outside the San Isidro Church, while the other was injured inside the church. Initially, the ministry had stated that the attack occurred at the San Lorenzo Church.
Local media, citing eyewitness accounts, reported that the attacker killed the sacristan with a cleaver. The police are investigating the incident to determine the nature of the attack. The last terrorist attack in Spain occurred in August 2017 when a terrorist cell carried out attacks that resulted in 16 deaths and 140 injuries on La Rambla street in Barcelona and in the coastal resort of Cambrils. The attacks were claimed by ISIS.
