American sprinter Noah Lyles and German long jumper Malaika Mihambo announced their infections during the Paris 2024 Olympics. Lyles settled for a bronze medal in the 200-meter race after previously winning gold in the 100 meters at the same event, before revealing his COVID-19 diagnosis. He wore a face mask in the mixed zone before competing in the 200-meter final, raising speculations, and later stated, "I have COVID." He added, "I took tests, and the result came back positive; we quickly implemented quarantine measures at a hotel near the Olympic village. We isolated ourselves from everyone. It certainly affected my performance; I should have had a lot of rest. I'm proud of myself; I came here for the bronze medal with COVID." Lyles left the decision open regarding his participation in the 4 X 100-meter relay final.
