The New British Prime Minister Promises Support for Ukraine... What About Israel?

The new British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has pledged that his government will continue military and financial support for Ukraine, similar to NATO allies. In a speech, Starmer stated, "The main priority for Britain is arming Ukraine: the NATO summit, of course, will be very important; I want to be clear... the primary responsibility of my government is security and defense. To be clear, our support for NATO is unwavering." He continued, "I will confirm, as I did yesterday during my conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, that we will stand with our allies to support his country." Starmer mentioned that he has already held several phone conversations with foreign leaders "to establish relationships and have important discussions about Ukraine and other key issues."

Regarding Gaza, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the need for London to take a balanced stance on the war in the Middle East, stating that it will use diplomacy to ensure a ceasefire and the release of hostages. In an interview in Berlin, as reported by the "Times of Israel," Lammy said, "It is time for the United Kingdom to engage with the outside world." He added, "I want to return to a balanced position regarding Israel and Gaza. We have been very clear that we want to see a ceasefire... We want to see those hostages released." He further remarked, "The fighting must stop, and aid must enter, and I will use all diplomatic efforts to ensure we reach a ceasefire." Lammy is visiting Germany, marking his first international trip after the Labour Party's sweeping victory in the British elections on Friday, which ended 14 years of Conservative rule and brought Keir Starmer to power as Prime Minister.
